It’s common for a couple going through divorce to dispute over who gets what in the settlement, as property, houses and even children are fought over. However it’s not often that recent lottery wins come into play. However an 81-year-old man in Ontario, Canada, is battling his estranged wife (22-years his junior at 59) over his winning lottery ticket, which is worth a cool $3.5 million.
The pensioner, Gerald Moore, claims that his estranged wife stole his winning ticket before filing for divorce so that she could claim his money. The ticket was purchased in April this year, and his wife Patricia filed for divorce in August.
Gerald claims that his wife has been colluding with another family member to steal his winnings.
The accusations are currently being heard in a Canadian court, where Patricia Moore also stands accused of tampering with her husband’s medication in order to render him docile, and so that he doesn’t understand what has happened.
The location of the money is also under dispute as it’s alleged by Gerald Moore that Patricia’s daughter claimed the money, and divided it between herself, her sister and Patricia.

There any many reasons given for divorce in the UK, the most common of which include unfaithfulness and unreasonable behaviour. However, a woman in India has been threatened with divorce by her husband, after just two years of marriage, because of her smoking.

A 38-year-old divorce, who received almost £56,000 from her ex husband in her divorce settlement, was conned out of the full amount by a confidence trickster who trapped her in a mortgage scam.
The woman, who refused to be named, believes she was groomed by the conman after he’d wined and dined her to gain her trust. The man was named as Eric Fretten, though is unlikely to be his real name. The single mother of three children stated:
He was getting my trust by doing nice things like taking me out for dinner. He convinced me he was a financial and mortgage expert and everything he did was believable. Looking back, he groomed me.
My money has all gone. You cannot describe how vulnerable and stupid this makes you feel. Now all the money I had set aside for a home for me and my three children to live in has gone.
She claims that she was overheard by the conman when she was talking to a friend in public about how she’d intended to invest her divorce settlement in property. The man approached her, saying that he was a financial expert and proposed an investment opportunity for her. Within three month she had handed over the entire sum of her divorce settlement, £55,900.
The man convinced her he was legitimate by taking her for meals and to the theatre.
It may sound stupid but I completely trusted him. I thought he was my friend.
He was a 61-year-old guy. I didn’t think he could be a conman.
The woman actually transferred £5,000 from her Lloyds TSB account into his within weeks of meeting him. Police are looking for him in London and Birmingham.

A woman has won a settlement figure of £50,000 per year in maintenance in her divorce from her husband, not for her children, or her lifestyle, but for her horses.
Animals are always a sore point during divorce as couples often argue over ‘who gets the dog’, but this ruling represents a landmark case as it’s the first time such a figure has been awarded in order for one party to keep pets. Three appeal judges finally ruled that the woman should receive the money, part of a £1.5 million settlement, as she is so devoted to her horses that she cannot live without them. She was also awarded £900,000 in order to buy a home with enough land for her to graze the horses.
The couple had no children, but the court heard that the horses acted as a substitute for children for the wife.
Sir Mark Potter, who is the country’s most senior family judge, commented on the case:
During the marriage the horses played a major part in the wife’s life with the consent and encouragement of the husband. This was all the more so after she lost a baby in 2001 and the husband gave her a third horse (a foal) to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary in 2004, to add to her own two horses which she had bought herself for £20,000 out of a personal inheritance in order to justify her eventing.
The husband tried to argue that the wife didn’t need her horses, and wanted her to accept a sum of £600,000 to buy a home and she could get rid of the horses. However the court ruled that the horses were a prominent part of the couple’s lives and that she should be able to keep them.
The decision sets a precedent in UK law as the first time that a significant amount of money has been awarded for the upkeep of animals.

The link between money and divorce has always existed, with the lack of money being a strong contributing factor in many divorces. However the economy in Spain is so poor that many couples who wish to divorce are unable to do so, and are being forced to stay together.
The first quarter of this year saw the divorce rate in Spain fall by 20% compare to 2007. A total of 29,704 divorces were reported in Q1 2008, compared with 37,497 in Q1 2007.
Indeed the total number of divorces in Spain in 2007 was down from the number in 2006, from 140,000 in 2006 to 130,897 in 2007. That trend looks like continuing into this year, which according to expert analysts is due to the country’s failing economy. Couples are realising that they cannot afford to divorce and fund two separate lifestyles and households.
Gonzalo Pueyo is from the Spanish Association of Family Lawyers.
In eras of plenty, divorces are more frequent. But when times are tough, many couples decide to maintain stability and their standard of living rather than split the household and incur all those extra costs. They may live in the same house but not be a couple.
According to reports, some middle class couples in Spain who divorce find their standard of living take a massive drop, often causing them to live like students in small, rented accommodation.
The Spanish economy has dropped with fall in house prices, as it has done in many parts of the world.

American pop star Pink has just come out of a two year marriage with her ex-husband Carey Hart. Just like most people who are recently divorced, Pink is feeling very vulnerable right now and has displayed this by looking at the new religion of Scientology.
It appears that Pink turned to her actress friend Juliette Lewis for support when she split from her husband, when her marriage to Hart had been plagued by rumours of divorce throughout. Lewis is herself an active Scientologist, and has introduced Pink to the religion.
Scientology is a controversial religion that was invented by a failed Science Fiction author, though despite its dubious origins it has proved very popular among an array of Hollywood celebrities. Stars such as John Travolta, Lisa Marrie Presley and Tom Cruise have all been heavily involved with the religion. What links all of these celebrities? They’re all been through divorce themselves.
According to reports Pink hasn’t signed on to the religion just yet as she’s still checking it out, but it would seem probable that she will, and become the latest celebrity to adopt the bizarre religion after a public divorce.

When couples divorce it’s more common than you’d think that one of the partners, usually the husband, attempts to conceal assets in order to avoid having to give them up during the settlement. They hide their assets, or undervalue them, in order to retain a larger portion of their money.
With this becoming more and more common, forensic accountants are starting to play a larger role in divorce cases in the UK. Recently, cases involving Sir Paul McCartney and footballer Ray Parlour have been in the spotlight, and have required forensic accountants to ensure that no money or assets were being diverted.
Forensic accountants even play a part in helping the CSA calculate the required payments for the parent with care.
David Liddell is a partner in an accountants firm, working as a forensic accountant. He says that usually it’s the husband that looks to hide their true wealth.
They are often the business-owning spouse, which gives them a greater opportunity to hide assets. Or perhaps men view divorce differently?
In such circumstances a forensic investigation could put the financial cheat at a disadvantage.
If you can reveal that an errant spouse has been hiding their true wealth he or she will face great difficulty in court.
If there was more transparency and trust during a divorce, the role of the forensic accountant wouldn’t be necessary.

The Pope, speaking in an address to French bishops, that the Catholic church will not bless what he called ‘irregular unions’, meaning couples who had remarried after divorce. Catholics who have divorced, and then remarried, and wish to remain active members of the church are currently unable to take communion, and their new marriage isn’t recognised. Instead their first marriage is still valid in the eyes of the church.
Catholics who have remarried are able to take communion if they abstain from sex with their new partners however. Many bishops have pressed for a change in the way the church sees divorce, as they want the church to adapt to changing times and values, however the Pope has decreed that there will be no lapsing of the laws that were laid down by Christ himself.
The Pope is willing however to make allowances for Catholics who wish to hold their mass in the original Latin, which is popular among traditionalists.
Everyone has a place in the church. Every person, without exception, should be able to feel at home and never rejected.

According to research, the second year of a marriage is the year that most couples file for divorce. It seems that in the second year, the honeymoon period is most definitely over.
The divorce advice website Divorce-Online.co.uk concluded that 10% of all divorces are applied for during the second year of marriage, which is the highest rate. The advice website states that online divorces have been a large part of the quick and easy divorce culture that seems to have spread throughout the UK. They’ve stated that Internet divorces have doubled in the last 6 months.
The website conducted a survey of over 11,000 divorce cases, and also discovered that there’s a high chance of one of the members of a marriage having an affair within the first five years. Most likely to cheat are men, as 80% of divorces that sight adultery as the reason were filed by women.
The increase in Internet divorces seems to be due to a number of factors, including price and conveniences, though there is no substitute for an experienced divorce lawyer.
Christine Northam, a divorce councillor with ‘Relate’ stated that more marriages tend to fail in the second year because of a variety of reasons:
Younger marriages tend to be less stable. Possibly it was not strong enough to start: one of them wanted a wedding, or there was pregnancy, peer pressure.
It all feels too much too soon and one starts looking outside the marriage.
